My good friend, John Scarboro, sent me a picture last weekend of the first protected bike lane in Mountain View. The best part - it protects cyclists where they need it the most - AT THE INTERSECTION! This design encourages motorists to go around the bike lane as they approach the intersection to make a right turn. As they should.
Even better, this intersection separates turning motorist movements from cyclist movements with separate signal phases, made easy wtith bicycle signal heads and the lighted no-right-turn sign for cars you see above. This eliminates motorist-cyclist conflicts altoghehter. We love it! If you love it too, share this article on Facebook.
Come check out Mountain View's first protected bike lane and other little known gems in Mountain View during our Summer Family Bike Ride and Picnic. We're hoping to get somebody from Google to tell us about the new lane. We have them to thank for it!! This whole design is just one part of their Green Loop, which is a low-stress bike route that helps Googlers ride from building to building.
